As the Cathedral for the Diocese of Owensboro, Saint Stephen is also an active and vibrant parish offering a full range of ministries, services, and activities. Many parishioners are involved in the parish's organizations and committees, such as the religious education program, ministry to the sick and homebound, or one of the pastoral committees. The parish tries to make joyful dignified liturgy and worship one of the chief characteristics of our faith community.

Pastor's Perspective

Dear Parishioners,

Sister Martha has informed me that she will be leaving the parish at the end of June to assume another ministerial position. We are grateful for her commitment to our parish community, the competence she has brought to Faith Formation on all levels, and her service to so many different segments of our parish. We are a better faith community because of Sr. Martha’s ministry among us. I have relied heavily on her these past five years and am sad that she is leaving us. We will find an appropriate way to express our gratitude to her later in the spring. In the meantime, pray for her as she makes this transition and pray that we can find someone to fill this essential staff position.

I recently had a conversation with a young adult Catholic who was preparing to marry someone in a civil ceremony, or in a non-Catholic Church. In other words, the person was getting married “outside the Church.” For whatever reason, this young person was unaware that Catholics are required to marry in accord with the laws of the Church for their marriage to be valid. I encourage anyone contemplating marriage to speak with a priest to make arrangements for the proper preparation for the sacrament and to be sure that the wedding will be celebrated validly. I remind anyone who is not married “in the Church” that you are not permitted to receive Holy Communion or any other sacraments until you are restored to full communion with the Church. Our diocesan marriage policy requires that anyone who intentionally celebrates an invalid marriage must wait at least one year before celebrating a valid marriage in the Church. Furthermore, anyone who may be cohabiting with another outside of marriage should not be receiving Holy Communion.

In response to my recent comments about our budget deficit, a parish family recently sent us a check for $250. I will tell you that they were already meeting their stewardship pledge. Many thanks to this family and to any others who can reach a little deeper to assist us at this time.

Love, Fr. John
